Kukio Challenge 2012

The Kukio Challenge
2012 Kuki'o Challenge Sunday, June 3rd

The Kuki'o Challenge was established to create a friendly multi-sport competition and to benefit the Hui Laulima O Kekaha Kai.

This group was established to ensure the protection of the natural, cultural and scenic resources of Kekaha Kai State Park in North Kona.

Kekaha Kai State Park includes over 1,600 acres. The lands are makai of Queen Ka`ahumanu Highway, and extend from the ahupua`a of Kaulana in the south, to Manini`owali and Kuki`o in the north. The Park encompasses six miles of shoreline, many pre- and post-contact historic properties, as well as anchialine ponds, native plants, wildlife, geologic features, and ocean resources.

The race consists of a .5 mile swim, 3 mile run, and 4 mile paddle, or 2 mile paddleboard/stand-up paddleboard. An awards lunch with local entertainment follows the race at beautiful Kikaua Point Park. Over 100 competitors are expected to participate in this year’s race. In addition to the athletes participating, we expect over 100 spectators and volunteer to watch and help with the race. Kuki'o is also home to the Blue Water Swim held each October, which pits athletes against one another in a grueling 1.2 mile open ocean water swim.

Local businesses have the opportunity to be a part of this event through monetary and product donations to offset race expenses. We believe that it is our collective responsibility to preserve and protect our natural and cultural resources, and so, we donate 100% of the participant entry fees to Hui Laulima O Kekaha Kai.
